Using Zinc Air chemistry, the system uses oxygen from the atmosphere as an active ingredient which allows the battery to pack in an enormous amount of energy for their size & weight. These hearing aid batteries all have a small hole in the case that allows air into the battery, which is used as part of the chemical reaction. The battery is not activated until the plastic seal is removed.
